India and Canada Re-establish Diplomatic Ties After Two Years

India and Canada have agreed to restore diplomatic services nearly two years after a row strained their relations over the killing of a Sikh separatist leader. The announcement was made during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, at the Group of Seven summit in Alberta.

The two countries will designate new high commissioners to improve relations and facilitate communication between citizens and businesses. The leaders also reiterated their commitment to a bilateral relationship based on mutual respect and sovereignty.

This development comes after Canada’s previous accusations of India’s alleged involvement in the killing of Hareep Singh Nijjar, which New Delhi denied. Tensions between the two countries escalated, with Ottawa expelling Canadian diplomats and India withdrawing its high commissioner.

However, it appears that the two countries are moving forward with renewed diplomatic efforts, with a focus on rebuilding trust and cooperation in various sectors such as technology, digital transition, and food security. This is seen as an effort to improve ties between the two nations, which have been strained due to concerns about Sikh separatist groups in Canada.

In related news, Indian Prime Minister Modi recently discussed Kashmir with US President Donald Trump, who had previously proposed mediation over the disputed region. However, India has clarified that it does not accept third-party mediation and instead relies on direct talks between its military leaders and those of Pakistan.
