Blumhouse has acquired the share of prospective rights for the Saw franchise, previously owned by producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg, as part of a deal led by CAA Evolution. This move brings back the creative vision of film director James Wan, who directed the first Saw movie in 2004.
The deal marks a significant shift in the future of the franchise, with Lionsgate retaining a 50% interest in the IP that spans 10 movies and various other assets, such as comic books, video games, and theme park attractions. Blumhouse will distribute films and continue to partner on the property.
In a statement, Koules expressed his pride in building the franchise over the past two decades and gratitude to fans for their support. He praised James Wan’s return to lead the franchise into its next chapter, stating that it was an “amazing ride” and thanking those who worked with him on the films.
Burg also reflected on the franchise’s 21-year history, saying he was grateful to see it return to its original creators. He expressed his hope that Jigsaw and the Saw universe would continue to thrive in new movies.
James Wan welcomed the opportunity to revisit the world of Saw, stating that coming back to the franchise with a fresh perspective was both thrilling and deeply personal. Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum emphasized the strategic investment in one of the most recognizable and successful horror genre properties.
The move raises questions about how the franchise will be rebooted successfully without its iconic face and voice, Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw. However, with James Wan at the helm, fans may see a continuation of the legacy while pushing it forward in bold new directions.
