NASCAR driver Carson Hocevar has been fined $50,000 by Spire Motorsports for making derogatory comments about Mexico City during a live stream from the Viva Mexico 250 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The team said the fine will be donated to three Mexican organizations and that Hocevar has apologized for his mistake.
In an apology posted on social media, Hocevar acknowledged that he had never been outside the US before and relied on negative information about Mexico City. He described his comments as embarrassing and promised to learn from the experience.
Spire Motorsports emphasized its commitment to respecting hosts, competitors, and communities, saying “Respect is not a slogan. It’s a daily expectation.” The team will provide cultural-sensitivity training for Hocevar and work with NASCAR to ensure that words carry weight.
