A pair of scuffles broke out during Tuesday’s Connecticut Sun-Indiana Fever game, but no players will face suspensions despite the intense physical play and heightened tensions. The WNBA announced that no fines or suspensions were handed out after a final-minute altercation involving three players resulted in their ejection from the game.
Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham was disqualified for her hard foul on Jacy Sheldon with 46.1 seconds remaining, but received only a fine due to a flagrant foul. Connecticut guard Marina Mabrey was also fined for forcefully bumping Caitlin Clark earlier in the game, and had her technical foul upgraded to a flagrant 2.
The late-game commotion began when Sheldon poked Clark’s eye while defending her, followed by an altercation between players and coaches. When Cunningham committed a hard foul on Sheldon, it escalated into a full-blown melee involving teammates, coaches, and security. The WNBA deemed Lindsay Allen and Sheldon as “escalators” in the incident, leading to their ejection.
Both teams expressed frustration with the officiating throughout the game, but Indiana coach Stephanie White avoided criticism for her comments. The Sun face the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, while the Fever head to the West Coast for a Thursday matchup against Golden State.
