Adobe has finally filled the gap left by Apple’s lack of advanced camera features in its new app, Indigo. This experimental camera app offers granular control over camera settings and packs AI-based features like resolution upscaling, denoising, and reflection removal tools. We put it to the test in Edinburgh and found that it delivers impressive results.
Indigo’s manual white balance feature allows for a slight warmth to the scene, which we often find lacking in Apple’s default camera app. The zero-lag shutter is also a game-changer, capturing the moment with no delay between pressing the shutter button and the image taking. This feature is particularly useful for capturing high-drama shots like football games or pets jumping for a frisbee.
The app’s AI-enhanced digital zoom outperforms Apple’s optical zoom, retaining more detail than simply zooming in to 10x. The AI Denoise tool also sharpens up images without looking overly digitally enhanced. While it may not always deliver the best results, Indigo produces natural-looking images with realistic shadow tones and colors.
One notable feature of Indigo is its seamless integration with Adobe Lightroom for further editing. Users can share their captured images directly to Lightroom and work on them using profiles and HDR editing. However, compatibility issues with Google’s Snapseed editor are expected to be resolved in future updates.
If you’re a keen photographer looking for more control over your images, Indigo is definitely worth installing and playing around with. Although it may not have all the features of Apple’s default camera app, its experimental nature means new features like creative looks, portrait modes, and exposure bracketing are potentially on the horizon.
As Adobe considers releasing an Android version “for sure,” the fact that this powerful app is currently free to use without requiring a subscription makes it well worth trying out.
