Ryan Murphy is pushing back against criticism of his upcoming American Love Story series, which features Sarah Pidgeon as late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Murphy claims the public’s backlash over test images showing Pidgeon with a different hair color and fashion choices was “not fair.” He says it was a mistake to release the images before the look was perfected.
Murphy explained that he released the photos to avoid paparazzi swarming his actors while filming in New York City. However, he acknowledges the criticism of Bessette-Kennedy’s style was unwarranted and took responsibility for releasing the images too early.
To address concerns about the portrayal, Murphy has enlisted a 10-person “style advisory board” to source authentic wardrobe pieces, including items owned by Bessette-Kennedy herself. He plans to release short videos showcasing Pidgeon in costume alongside real-life versions of Bessette-Kennedy’s iconic looks.
Murphy also noted that the media treatment of Bessette-Kennedy’s character in the show mirrors the real-life experience of the late fashion icon, who was constantly photographed and subject to harsh criticism. He sees this as a commentary on the objectification of women in the public eye.
