The Los Angeles Dodgers announced plans to assist immigrant communities in the city on Thursday, following weeks of increasing calls from fans and critics alike for the team to address the recent federal immigration raids.
Manager Dave Roberts expressed hope that the team could be a positive distraction for those affected by the raids. Utilityman Kiké Hernández also spoke out on social media, condemning the abuse and mistreatment of immigrants in LA.
The Dodgers’ silence on the issue initially sparked controversy after singer Nezza was asked to sing the national anthem in English at Dodger Stadium, despite her request to perform it in Spanish as a protest against the immigration raids. However, the team has now broken its silence, taking steps to support immigrant communities in the city.
