Adobe’s AI-Powered ‘Project Indigo’ Camera App for iPhone Released

Adobe has released a new computational photography camera app called Project Indigo, available exclusively on iPhones. Marc Levoy, a former Google engineer and current Adobe Fellow, led the development of this innovative app.

Project Indigo uses artificial intelligence to capture multiple photos in quick succession and combine them into a single high-quality image with reduced noise and increased dynamic range. The app also offers manual controls such as focus, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance, allowing users to achieve an “SLR-like” look.

A detailed blog post by Levoy and senior scientist Florian Kainz explains the technology behind Project Indigo, including its computational photography capabilities and image processing pipeline. The authors discuss how their app aims to become a testbed for new technologies that may be integrated into future flagship products, such as reflection removal and video recording.

The team’s goal is to create an integrated mobile camera and editing experience that leverages the latest advances in computational photography and AI. They aim to appeal to both casual and advanced photographers, offering a natural SLR-like look for casual users and manual control for professionals.
