According to the agency’s new report, “Technology 2040: A Vision For The European Space Agency,” these massive, heat-reflective structures will be capable of sustaining life for extended periods.
Robots will explore Mars without risk of exhaustion or damage from radiation and dust. Advanced AI will make critical decisions, while an interconnected internet network will link the entire solar system. In just 15 years, human astronauts will wear practical spacesuits to roam the Martian surface in protective domes, living and sleeping within these self-sustaining habitats.
The ‘space oases’ on Mars will provide a safe haven from cosmic radiation, allowing humans to sleep, eat, and work between trips outside. These structures will produce their own power and food, rendering resupply missions from Earth unnecessary. The ESA envisions autonomous technology, similar to the droids in Star Wars, to explore vast Martian landscapes.
Future plans include mining comet bodies and asteroids for building materials and analyzing them to reveal more about our solar system’s history. Large space structures will no longer be limited by launch vehicle dimensions, with autonomous spacecraft capable of making decisions independently.
The ESA aims to create a “circular and sustainable” space economy, mitigating environmental impacts, while enabling humans to stay in space for months or years at a time or even move there permanently.
