Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has called on the federal government to “denaturalize and deport” Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. The request comes after Omar criticized President Donald Trump’s military parade last Saturday, stating that the military was being deployed in a manner that disregarded people’s constitutional rights.
Uthmeier made the statement on social media platform X, urging supporters to participate in protests against Omar’s comments. Omar, a naturalized citizen of Somali descent, has been the subject of Republican criticism since her election as the first African refugee and Muslim woman to Congress in 2019.
Omar’s origins have been a focal point for Republicans, including former President Trump, who had previously called for her deportation during his presidential campaign. Uthmeier, who is currently running for re-election as attorney general, made the same request after serving as DeSantis’ presidential campaign manager in 2024.
Uthmeier took office as attorney general four months ago and is now seeking to keep his position up for election in 2026. The move by Uthmeier marks a significant escalation of Republican criticism against Omar, highlighting the increasingly divisive nature of the debate surrounding her citizenship status.
