Iran’s Finances Under Siege by Israel-Linked Hacker Group

Predatory Sparrow, a hacker group linked to Israel, has launched devastating cyberattacks on Iran’s financial systems, destroying millions of dollars in cryptocurrency holdings and data from top banks.

The group, which often disguises its true origins as an Iranian hacktivist organization, targeted the crypto exchange Nobitex, accusing it of enabling sanctions violations and terrorist financing. According to Elliptic, a cryptocurrency tracing firm, the hackers wiped out over $90 million in Nobitex holdings, a rare instance of hackers destroying assets rather than stealing them.

The attacks follow another wave of disruption, with Predatory Sparrow targeting Sepah bank, claiming to have destroyed all its data and posting documents showing agreements between the bank and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The group is threatening to target other financial institutions linked to the Iranian regime, leaving investors and users on high alert.

These cyberattacks are the latest chapter in a long-running saga of disruption by Predatory Sparrow, which has previously disabled thousands of gas station payment systems across Iran and set a steel mill ablaze.
