At its Worldwide Developer Conference on June 9, Apple unveiled a new “Liquid Glass” aesthetic featuring semi-transparent effects on app icons and other elements. The update has sparked intense debate among users and industry professionals over its visual appeal versus usability.
While some describe the design as “gorgeous,” many others have expressed strong disapproval, with some even questioning whether it would meet Steve Jobs’ approval standards. Concerns about form over function are widespread, with several users commenting that the new interface is difficult to read and “hurt[s] my eyes” due to excessive transparency.
Industry experts also raised usability concerns, citing difficulties in reading certain elements. Allan Yu, a product designer, noted that some elements can be hard to read because they’re made too transparent.
However, Josh Puckett of design consultancy Iteration remains hopeful that Apple will refine the interface. The iOS 26 update is currently only available as a developer beta, with a public release expected around September.
