A new COVID-19 variant called “Nimbus” is spreading rapidly across the United States, accounting for nearly half of all new cases since May. While experts say it doesn’t appear more dangerous than previous strains, people are reporting sharper and more painful symptoms, particularly sore throats.
“It’s surprising to hear about a new variant without hearing its name,” said one nursing home worker. However, Dr. Jaime Fergie, director of infectious diseases at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, notes that early signs suggest Nimbus is not more severe overall.
Common symptoms include cough, fatigue, and fever, while some individuals are experiencing sharp, painful sore throats. For families with medically vulnerable children, the threat feels real due to their previous experiences with COVID-19.
To mitigate this risk, Dr. Fergie emphasizes the importance of staying up-to-date on COVID vaccinations, especially for high-risk individuals.
