Mariska Hargitay Reveals She Was Accidentally Left Behind in Car Crash That Killed Her Mother

Actress Mariska Hargitay has revealed a shocking secret from her past in her new documentary film “My Mom Jayne,” which premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 13. In the film, it is discovered that Hargitay was accidentally left behind at the scene of the car crash that killed her mother, actress Jayne Mansfield, in 1967.

According to the film, Hargitay’s brother Zoltan realized she was missing after he woke up in a car with other survivors of the accident. The siblings were later reunited and it was discovered that Mariska had been lodged under the passenger seat with a head injury.

Hargitay spoke about why she made the documentary and what motivated her to tell her story. “This is my story to tell,” she said. “I had a rough time with the fact that somebody else told it before I did, and that was the impetus of the movie — that I wanted to tell my own story.”

The film marks Hargitay’s directorial debut and will premiere on June 27 on HBO and Max. Hargitay hopes her story can inspire others to share their own experiences. “I encourage a lot of women, and men, to tell their stories,” she said, explaining that it is an empowering experience that allows individuals to regain control over their lives.
