The Florida Panthers have celebrated their second consecutive championship, but not without damaging the Stanley Cup. The iconic trophy’s bowl is cracked and the bottom is dented, a condition that has been seen before due to its age and history of mishandling. The 131-year-old silver chalice has been submerged in pools and the Atlantic Ocean, and has suffered damage over the years.
In the team’s victory parade on Sunday, the Cup will be repaired by the Hockey Hall of Fame staff, who are taking steps to ensure its safety. The Panthers followed tradition by partying with the Cup into the wee hours, a practice that has resulted in previous incidents of damage, including the Tampa Bay Lightning’s boat parade in 2021 and the Colorado Avalanche’s incident the following year.
