The Indiana Pacers have advanced to a decisive Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder after a strong defensive performance in Game 6. The Pacers handed the Thunder a 108-91 defeat, forcing them to waive their flag after just 36 minutes of play.
Through five games, the Thunder had struggled to score efficiently, holding under a point per possession in 20 quarters. However, on Thursday, they were held to less than a point per possession in each of the first three periods, ultimately leading to their downfall.
The Pacers’ defense was led by active hands from Tyrese Haliburton and T.J. McConnell, who combined for eight deflections against the Thunder. A highlight play saw McConnell deflect an outlet pass and chase down the loose ball, resulting in a transition 3 that put the Pacers up six points.
Meanwhile, the Thunder struggled with turnovers, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander committing eight, including two on drives to Andrew Nembhard. This led to favorable matchups for the Pacers, who capitalized on their advantage in shooting opportunities (18 more than the Thunder).
The series’ contrast lies in ball movement, with the Pacers having thrown 718 more passes than the Thunder over six games. However, the game was ultimately decided by the other end of the floor, with the Thunder scoring 19.4 fewer points per 100 possessions in their three losses compared to their three wins.
A repeat of the Pacers’ strong shooting performance from their last Game 7 is unlikely, but the Thunder will need to improve on Thursday’s efforts if they hope to take the series.
