Flamengo came from behind to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in their Club World Cup Group D clash, handing the Brazilian side their second consecutive win in the tournament. Pedro Neto’s early strike gave Chelsea an advantage, but Flamengo staged a stirring comeback with goals from Bruno Henrique, Danilo, and Wallace Yan.
The result leaves Flamengo on top of Group D with six points from two matches, while Chelsea remain second with three. A victory for Esperance de Tunis against LAFC in the group’s other game later in the day would secure Flamengo’s place in the knockout rounds.
Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th minute after a studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas, but Flamengo sealed the win with Yan’s strike. The Brazilians’ comeback is the second time a South American team has defeated a European team by multiple goals in a FIFA international club competition since Vasco da Gama’s 3-1 win over Manchester United in 2000.
Flamengo coach Filipe Luís credited the large contingent of Brazilian fans at the game for the team’s success. “I noticed that we had the advantage,” Henrique said after the match. “And that’s when we started to pressure.”
The victory marked Flamengo’s second consecutive win in the tournament and keeps them on top of Group D with six points from two matches.
