Superyacht Bayesian Resurfaced After Sicily Storm Sinking

The superyacht Bayesian, owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch, has been resurfaced for the first time since it sank off the coast of Sicily in August last year, killing seven people, including Lynch and his teenage daughter. Salvage crews successfully raised the 56-metre vessel from the seabed using a holding area of a yellow floating crane barge. The operation, costing around $30m (£22m), is now set to begin its journey to the port of Termini Imerese for further investigation.

The Italian coastguard announced that the recovery would start on Saturday morning, with investigators expected to examine the vessel as part of an inquiry into the cause of the sinking. The operation was complex and temporarily suspended after a diver died during underwater work in mid-May.

Prosecutors have opened an inquiry into suspected manslaughter, with the boat’s captain and two British crew members under investigation. Investigators hope the yacht will yield vital clues to the causes of the sinking, particularly whether one of the hatches remained open or if the keel was improperly raised.
