Minneapolis, MN – General Mills has announced plans to remove certified colors from all its U.S. cereals and K-12 school foods by summer 2026. The company aims to complete this process for its full U.S. retail portfolio by the end of 2027.
The decision impacts only a small portion of General Mills’ K-12 school portfolio, as most of its school offerings are already made without certified colors. Currently, 85% of the company’s full U.S. retail portfolio is also free from certified colors.
“By removing certified colors from our products, we’re aligning with evolving consumer expectations and continuing to make food that tastes great and is accessible to all,” said Jeff Harmening, chairman and CEO of General Mills. The company has a proven track record of reformulation capabilities, having successfully delivered products that meet changing consumer needs.
General Mills’ Accelerate strategy focuses on building brands, innovating, unleashing scale, and standing for good. With a portfolio of beloved brands, including Cheerios, Nature Valley, and Häagen-Dazs, the company generated $20 billion in U.S. net sales in 2024. This move is part of General Mills’ ongoing efforts to serve with purpose and make food that the world loves.
