A nationwide listeria outbreak has led to the recall of ready-to-eat fettuccine Alfredo meals sold at Kroger and Walmart, following 17 illnesses and three deaths. The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is investigating the outbreak, which was linked to products made by FreshRealm, Inc. under the Home Chef brand.
Consumers who purchased these products are advised not to consume them and should discard or return them to the store. The recall affects 32.8-oz tray packages with a best-by date of June 27, 2024 or prior, as well as 12.3 oz and 12.5 oz tray packages with similar best-by dates.
The FDA reports that people in 13 states have become ill after eating precooked meals, with 16 hospitalized cases and three deaths attributed to listeriosis. The FSIS is still investigating the cause of the contamination and is warning consumers about the risks associated with consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to the infection. Listeria is treatable with antibiotics, but in severe cases, it can be fatal.
Consumers should check their refrigerators or freezers for any affected products and take action immediately to protect themselves from potential harm.
