Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the International Yoga Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam, marking one of the world’s largest yoga gatherings. The mega event was held along a 26-kilometre stretch from Ramakrishna Beach to Bhogapura and drew over 5 lakh people who performed yoga simultaneously. The celebration was part of a statewide commitment to yoga, with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announcing plans to include yoga in the state school curriculum.
The event aimed to set multiple records, including one recognized by Guinness World Records. Thousands of yoga-related events were held across Andhra Pradesh before the main event, and over 2.39 crore registrations were received. To promote yoga as a daily lifestyle practice, the state plans to issue a formal declaration on Yoga Day. The authorities also distributed t-shirts and yoga mats, with arrangements made for contingencies.
Massive security was deployed, with over 10,000 police personnel and 1,200 CCTV cameras monitoring the event. A state-of-the-art control room coordinated the event’s security. The celebrations were preceded by a month-long awareness drive under the banner ‘Yogandhra’, which included 15,000 yoga competitions at various levels.
