Napping Habits Linked to Increased Mortality Risk in Middle-Aged Adults

A study presented at SLEEP 2025 found that middle-to-older aged adults who take frequent, longer, and irregular daytime naps have a higher risk of mortality. Researchers analyzed data from over 86,000 participants and found that napping patterns can predict mortality risk. However, the study did not establish causation between napping and death. Instead, it suggests that excessive and irregular napping may be linked to underlying health conditions such as poor nighttime sleep, sleep disorders, and cardiovascular disease. The study’s findings highlight the importance of addressing the root causes of excessive napping rather than simply eliminating napping itself.
