AI Talent War Heats Up as Meta Spends Billions on Recruitment

Meta’s aggressive recruitment drive has sparked an “AI talent war” with rival OpenAI, according to the company’s technology chief Andrew Bosworth. In a bid to counter OpenAI’s high-priced offers, Meta is investing heavily in acquiring top talent from startups like Scale AI and Perplexity AI.

Bosworth revealed that Meta had dangled $100 million signing bonuses in front of OpenAI employees but found their best people opting to stay with the startup. Instead, Bosworth said his company is meeting its investment in personnel, computing power, and expertise together to pursue the vision of a superintelligent AI.

Meta’s capital expenditures reached $14 billion in the first quarter, and the company plans to invest similarly in personnel. The “AI talent war” has intensified, with OpenAI reportedly reaching $10 billion in annualized revenue but continuing to rack up losses. Bosworth emphasized that Meta believes in a future where superintelligent AI will assist humans at every step of the way.
