AI Will Replace Many Jobs, Says “Godfather of AI”

Geoffrey Hinton, a renowned expert in artificial intelligence known as the “Godfather of AI,” has warned that automation could lead to mass joblessness. In a recent interview, Hinton stated that AI is poised to replace people in certain fields due to its growing capabilities.

While some jobs are safer from replacement than others, many white-collar jobs may be at risk. Hinton cited paralegals as an example of professions that could be automated, and he expressed his concerns about working in a call center due to the potential for AI-assisted automation.

However, blue-collar work is expected to take longer to be replaced by AI. Hinton advised plumbers and other skilled workers as safer options, noting that AI still struggles with physical manipulation tasks.

The impact of AI on hiring practices has also been significant. A report from venture capital firm SignalFire found that big tech companies have reduced their hiring of new graduates for entry-level roles, citing AI as a major factor. The percentage of new graduate hires at companies like Meta and Google dropped by 25% between 2023 and 2024.

Additionally, the finance sector is also experiencing job losses due to AI. Morgan Stanley recently announced layoffs of 2,000 employees, with plans to replace some positions with AI. A report from Bloomberg Intelligence predicts that up to 200,000 jobs could be cut across major banks in the next five years, including Citigroup and JPMorgan.

As Hinton emphasizes, having a strong skillset is crucial for success in an AI-driven job market. With AI set to continue its growth, it’s essential for individuals to adapt and develop skills that complement these technological advancements.
