UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has expressed his disapproval over Kneecap’s planned performance at the upcoming Glastonbury Festival. The rapper’s band member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh is currently on bail for allegedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah, a group designated as a terrorist organisation by the UK.
Starmer stated that he doesn’t think it’s “appropriate” for Kneecap to perform at Glastonbury due to the security concerns and threats associated with the group. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has also called for the BBC not to show Kneecap’s performance, stating they are “propagandists.”
However, a BBC spokesperson contradicted this claim, saying they will continue to broadcast music coverage from Glastonbury while adhering to their editorial guidelines. The group’s upcoming court date in August adds to the controversy surrounding their performance.
Kneecap has responded to Starmer’s comments with a post on social media, accusing him of arming a genocide and expressing support for Palestine. The group has consistently courted controversy through their lyrics and merchandise.
Despite the PM’s disapproval, many fans view Kneecap as a voice for their views that politicians are not listening to. With their rising fame and success in various performances, it is likely that Kneecap will continue to polarise opinions on both sides of the issue.
