Rapamycin and Calorie Restriction Show Similar Life-Extending Effects

A recent study on eight vertebrate species, including humans, suggests that restricting calorie intake or taking rapamycin may help extend lifespan. Researchers analyzed data from 167 studies on lifespan interventions across various animal species.

The findings indicate that dietary restriction, such as intermittent fasting, significantly increases lifespan in both males and females of the studied species. Rapamycin, originally developed as an immunosuppressant, was found to have a similar effect, with some mice experiencing a 30% increase in lifespan when combined with another cancer drug.

However, metformin, a type 2 diabetes medication touted for its potential longevity benefits, showed no significant impact on lifespan. The study’s lead author notes that caloric restriction has been shown to work in increasing lifespan for years, with the latest research confirming this effect across various species.
