Jaws’ Enduring Impact on Martha’s Vineyard 50 Years Later

Five decades have passed since Steven Spielberg’s iconic film, Jaws, roamed the shores of Martha’s Vineyard. The summer blockbuster not only transformed cinematic history but also forever altered the tranquil New England island. Locals reminisce about the chaos caused by Hollywood’s invasion.

The film’s impact was immediate and profound. As director Steven Spielberg explained, “It was a perfect creative storm… Jaws reshaped the way movies are made.” To understand this phenomenon, we spoke to those who witnessed it firsthand – local child actor Jeffrey Kramer, former Harbormaster Charlie Blair, and Executive Director Erica Ashton.

One of the most memorable aspects of filming on Martha’s Vineyard was the legendary food fight between crew members at Bettini Restaurant. “It was a bit of catharsis,” said Jean Wong, director of marketing at Harbor View Hotel. “A chaotic, fun moment that has become an integral part of Jaws history.”

When it came to re-creating gruesome scenes, such as Alex Kintner’s infamous shark attack, the team faced significant challenges. According to Alex himself, “It took seven or eight hours for the blood to clear out of the water and start over.” Despite these difficulties, the film’s success has made Martha’s Vineyard a magnet for Jaws enthusiasts.

Today, visitors flock to the island to take part in guided tours and relive the movie on location. Erica Ashton, executive director at the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, believes that “Jaws captured not only the suspense of the sea but also the soul of this place… It shaped us in return.” As for local residents like Jeffrey Voorhees, managing the Wharf Pub during filming’s heyday, they’re humbled by the enduring appeal of their small island.
