New York State is planning to build a new nuclear power plant in an effort to meet growing demand for clean energy. The project, directed by Governor Kathy Hochul, aims to develop at least 1 gigawatt of nuclear capacity. This capacity would be enough to power approximately one million homes. Multiple communities upstate have already expressed interest in hosting the facility.
The announcement was made during a speech at the Niagara Falls hydroelectric plant, where Governor Hochul discussed her plans for clean energy development. The new nuclear plant is seen as a major step towards reducing New York’s reliance on fossil fuels and meeting its climate change goals.
