BYU has secured what many consider its biggest recruiting win in program history as 5-star quarterback Ryder Lyons announced his commitment to the university on Tuesday. Lyons, ranked as the top recruit in California and the #4 overall QB in the 2026 class by 247 Sports, had offers from numerous top programs, including Oregon and USC.
Lyons’ decision marks a significant coup for BYU, which had been considered one of the finalists along with the Ducks. The Cougars’ winning offer over their opponents came as a result of Lyons spending an official visit to both campuses earlier in the week. However, it was ultimately BYU’s appeal that won him over.
As the son of former BYU defensive back Tim Lyons, Ryder comes from a football-rich family. His older brother Walker plays for USC, while Ryder plans to serve a mission for one year before enrolling at BYU. This means he will de facto become a 2027 recruit, as he will be competing for the starting QB job immediately upon his return.
Ryder is a dual-threat quarterback with exceptional arm talent and movement ability, making him a modern prototype of the position. According to 247 Sports recruiting analyst Greg Biggins, Lyons has “rare combination of arm talent and movement ability” that allows him to shred defenses with both his arm and leg.
The 5-star recruit is expected to make an immediate impact on the team as he plans to serve a mission for one year before enrolling in college. With NFL potential and the ability to be BYU’s starting QB for multiple years, Lyons brings a game-changing talent to the program.
