Lake Tahoe Boat Capsizing Tragedy Claims Eight Lives

A sudden and powerful thunderstorm on Lake Tahoe has claimed eight lives, with the body of the last missing person found Monday. The 27-foot gold Chris-Craft vessel capsized near D.L. Bliss State Park, resulting in two immediate rescues and six later recoveries. A seventh body was discovered Sunday evening.

The storm, which caught forecasters off guard, brought winds of up to 35 mph (56 kph) and waves over 8 feet (2.5 meters). The lake’s pristine waters, known for boating and recreation, proved deadly in the extreme conditions.

“It felt like we were in a tsunami,” said Brittany Glick, who was on a rented pontoon boat with seven others when the storm struck. “We were drenched and shaking uncontrollably. Our feet were numb and our toes turned blue.” The group had started celebrating a friend’s bachelorette party but soon found themselves battling the fury of the storm.

Divers searched a section of Lake Tahoe and located the last body Monday afternoon. The names of the victims will be released when family members are notified, according to authorities.
