The United Nations has condemned the US-backed food distribution system in Gaza, calling it “an abomination” and “a death trap.” At least 46 people waiting for aid have been killed by Israeli fire in two incidents in central and southern Gaza. The system, which is also backed by Israel, provides 41 million meals but has been criticized for its opaque funding and use of armed private security contractors.
The UN agencies have accused the US and Israel of perpetuating a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with more than 410 Palestinians reported killed since May. The system’s supporters claim it is key to undermining Hamas control in Gaza, but critics argue that it prioritizes military interests over humanitarian needs.
“This mechanism is in contradiction with international standards on aid distribution,” said Thameen al-Kheetan, a UN human rights official. “The weaponization of food for civilians constitutes a war crime.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has denied reports of wrongdoing, but witnesses describe chaotic scenes and gunfire near the GHF sites.
Gaza’s humanitarian crisis deepens as aid lorries struggle to reach the affected areas. World Central Kitchen said it had resumed cooking at some of its sites after receiving aid lorries for the first time in over 12 weeks. However, experts warn that Gaza remains on the brink of famine, and many Palestinians are reluctant to risk their lives for aid due to safety concerns.
The UN’s condemnation of the Gaza aid system is a call to action for governments and organizations to prioritize humanitarian needs over military interests. As Mahmoud al-Ghura, a father of four daughters, said, “They are called death zones. My son has already been martyred.” The international community must take immediate action to address this humanitarian crisis and ensure that Palestinians receive the aid they need.
