Scientists have caught a historic first sighting of the elusive Gonatus antarcticus deep-sea squid, and it’s been captured on video. The rare species was spotted in the Weddell Sea, surrounded by Antarctica, at a depth of 7,060 feet. The National Geographic Society has shared footage from the ROV SuBastian and the Schmidt Ocean Institute, showcasing the squid’s striking appearance as it floats calmly in the dark waters.
Measuring just three feet long, Gonatus antarcticus is notoriously difficult to find due to its deep-sea habitat. This chance encounter was a lucky discovery for the scientists, who were not supposed to be in that location when they spotted the squid. The video offers a rare glimpse into the life of this enigmatic species, making it an exciting moment for ocean explorers and scientists alike.
