The United States has a substantial military presence in the Middle East, with at least 19 facilities across the region. Eight permanent bases are operated by the US, including sites in Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
These bases serve as key hubs for air, sea, and intelligence operations. The Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar is the largest and most significant, hosting over 11,000 troops and the US Central Command regional headquarters. It has supported military operations across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, including serving as the primary staging ground for air forces against ISIS militants.
Iran’s recent vow to retaliate against US strikes on its nuclear sites has led to concerns about the safety of US bases in the region. Despite this, US officials say they are “fully postured to respond” and any attack on their troops would be a mistake.
Bahrain was singled out as a potential target by Iranian-backed militias, with facilities such as Camp Arifjan being targeted in August. However, experts say that even nearby countries like Kuwait could be attacked if Iran launches a missile strike.
The US has increased its military presence in the region, deploying additional fighter jets and refuelling tankers to counter the threat posed by Iranian-backed militias. The Trump administration has warned Iran not to strike any US targets, saying it would respond with “the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the conflict risks “descending into a rathole of retaliation,” emphasizing the need for caution and restraint in the region.
