BYU Lands Five-Star QB Ryder Lyons Over Oregon and USC Offers

BYU football has secured its highest-rated recruit since 2003, as five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons announced his commitment to the Cougars on Tuesday. Lyons, a dual-threat signal caller from Folsom, California, outshone offers from top programs like Oregon and USC.

Lyons, the third-highest rated recruit in the 247Sports composite rating, boasts an impressive track record, including being named California Gatorade Player of the Year last fall. He completed 68% of his passes for 3,011 yards and 46 touchdowns, while also rushing for 585 yards and 14 scores.

The Cougars’ recruiting class has gained significant momentum with Lyons’ commitment, bolstered by previous recruits Brock Harris, Bott Mulitalo, and Terrance Saryon. Lyons will join the 2027 season after serving a mission in 2027, alongside McKay Madsen, who left his own church mission for Clovis, California.

Lyons’ family ties to BYU are notable, with his father Tim playing strong safety at the university from 1996-1997 and his older sister recently graduating. Oak Ridge head coach Casey Taylor praised Lyons, saying “He scrambles and runs for big yardage, and passes the ball for big plays once you feel you have him down.”

This signing marks a significant moment in BYU football history, as the Cougars’ 2026 class ranks among the top 50 by 247Sports.
