Google Earth Celebrates 20 Years with AI-Driven Insights and Time Travel

Google Earth is turning 20, and while its capabilities may seem impressive now, it was a game-changer in 2005. The service has undergone significant changes over the years, including new “AI-driven insights” for professional users. These insights are likely to be integrated with Google’s AI technology.

Initially launched as a desktop client, Google Earth gained massive popularity within its first week, with 100 million downloads. Today, it is accessible through various platforms, including web, mobile apps, and the Google Earth Pro app. The service has remained true to its heritage, offering users a nostalgic experience.

As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, Google Earth has been inspired by social media trends that have shared historical images in Google Maps. This led to the introduction of a “time travel” interface, allowing users to view historic Street View images at various locations. Although this feature wasn’t new, it is being revisited as part of the milestone.

Additionally, Google Earth will now incorporate its 3D timelapse feature, which uses satellite data to display how areas have changed over time from a higher vantage point. This feature was announced in 2021 and remains a popular aspect of the service.
