Measles Outbreak Hits Utah, 2 New Cases Diagnosed

A measles outbreak is spreading in Utah after two new cases were diagnosed, bringing the total number of reported cases to over 1,200 nationwide. The two new patients are unvaccinated and not linked to each other or the previously diagnosed patient.

According to Dr. Leisha Nolen, Utah State Epidemiologist, the cases suggest there may be additional spread in the state. One patient traveled outside of the state, which could have led to exposure elsewhere.

Despite the outbreak, over 90% of Utah residents are vaccinated against measles, providing them with high protection against the disease. The vaccine is widely available and has been used since the 1970s.

Measles symptoms appear within 7-14 days after exposure, including a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Dr. Nolen emphasized that measles is highly contagious, especially among children.

Residents are being urged to monitor their surroundings for potential exposure. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services website tracks cases; visit the site for more information.
