Brazilian Tourist Missing on Indonesian Volcano After Falling Off Cliff

Rescuers in Indonesia are searching for 26-year-old Juliana Marins, a Brazilian tourist who fell while hiking near the crater of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano. The incident occurred on Saturday when Ms Marins was hiking with a group and disappeared around 06:30 local time.

According to Indonesian authorities, she fell from a cliff that surrounds the trail next to the volcano’s crater. Despite initial reports of her safety, rescuers were unable to find her due to extreme terrain and foggy weather conditions.

However, drone footage and clips filmed by hikers show Ms Marins alive on Saturday, sitting and moving around in grey soil near the hiking path. Rescuers later found her location but had to stop searching due to “climate conditions” and thick fog that hampered their efforts.

The rescue operation has been restarted, with Juliana’s family and Brazilian authorities urging for help. Mount Rinjani park authorities have confirmed that tourists were still hiking on the same route while Ms Marins needed assistance.

In 2022, a Portuguese man died after falling off the summit of Mount Rinjani, and in May this year, a Malaysian hiker died after a fall while climbing the volcano. The Brazilian foreign ministry has sent embassy employees to monitor the rescue efforts and is in touch with the Indonesian government.
