xAI appears to be developing an advanced file editor for its Grok platform, which would include spreadsheet support. According to reverse engineer Nima Owji, the new tool would allow users to edit files while simultaneously collaborating with Grok’s AI copilot.
Grok Studio, launched in April 2025, provides a split-screen workspace for generating documents and collaborating with others. The company has also introduced Workspaces that organize files and conversations in one place. While similar tools exist from OpenAI and Microsoft, Google’s Gemini Workspace for Sheets, Docs, and Gmail is the most comparable.
Gemini Workspace allows editing of Docs and Sheets while chatting with Gemini, but only within Google’s ecosystem. If Owji’s findings are correct, xAI’s advanced editor would be a step toward Elon Musk’s goal of turning X into an “everything app” that integrates documents, chat, payments, and social media. The extent to which the new editor will support file types beyond spreadsheets remains unclear.
