Measles Outbreak Confirmed in North Carolina for First Time in 2025

A case of measles has been confirmed in North Carolina for the first time in 2025, according to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). The affected child visited Forsyth and Guilford counties from another country where measles outbreaks have recently occurred.

The NCDHHS is advising unvaccinated children over one year old to receive a measles vaccination. The health agency is also working with local health departments to identify potential exposure sites.

Measles symptoms can start 7-21 days after exposure and may include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, white spots on the cheeks and gums, and a raised rash. Anyone experiencing symptoms should call ahead before visiting a doctor or emergency room to prevent further spread.

The risk of infection is significant, with 90% of unvaccinated individuals exposed to measles becoming infected, and about one in five hospitalizing with the disease.
