NC Confirms First Measles Case of 2025, Health Officials Sound Alarm

North Carolina has confirmed its first measles case of 2025, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. The case involves an infected child who visited Forsyth and Guilford Counties after exposure to multiple recent outbreaks while abroad.

Buncombe County’s health director, Doctor Jennifer Mullendore, is concerned about the speed and ease of measles transmission. Symptoms include a high fever, runny nose, and rash that starts on the face before spreading to the body. The virus can be deadly, with one in 1,000 cases not surviving.

Mullendore warns that people may develop severe symptoms years after diagnosis, including neurologic complications and a condition where the immune system is severely affected, making it difficult to fight off other infections.

She emphasizes the importance of vaccination, noting that even if you’re exposed, chances are high you’ll get infected. Mullendore recommends getting vaccinated and keeping records in case of future outbreaks.
