The Buffalo Sabres have traded forward J.J. Peterka to the Colorado Mammoth in exchange for defenseman Michael Kesselring and forward Josh Doan. As part of the deal, Peterka signed a five-year extension with Utah’s Mammoth worth $7.7 million annually.
Peterka, 23, is an ideal fit among the Mammoth’s emerging young core, which includes Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and Dylan Guenther. The forward tallied 118 points in his last two years with the Sabres, including a 27-goal, 41-assist campaign last year.
The Sabres, who are seeking to end their 14-year playoff drought, had Peterka on loan for the rest of the season before making the trade. General manager Kevyn Adams said they wanted to ensure Peterka knew how the team would improve.
Peterka’s departure is a significant blow to the Sabres’ offense, but his addition could help the Mammoth snap their own playoff drought, which dates back to the 2019-20 season.
