Medical Societies Stand Firm on Vaccines Amidst Review Policies

A letter signed by 79 medical societies has expressed concerns over recent federal immunization review policies, urging that vaccines remain available to patients without cost-sharing. The American Medical Association (AMA) joined the groups in sending a joint letter to the American people, reaffirming vaccines as the best option for protecting against influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will meet June 25-27 to discuss federal immunization recommendations for these diseases. While private insurance and employer-sponsored health plans are required to cover recommended vaccines at no cost, the committee’s decision to revise COVID-19 vaccine guidelines may have implications for public health.

Recent data shows a severe influenza season in the US, with high rates of hospitalizations and pediatric deaths attributed to unvaccinated children. The AMA letter highlights the importance of strong physician leadership in reducing preventable illnesses and emphasizes the role of vaccines in protecting the public.

Established in 1964, ACIP will also discuss the use of thimerosal, a preservative linked to false claims about autism. The committee’s decision is expected to impact public health efforts to prevent severe disease and protect against vaccine-preventable illnesses.
