Trump May Extend Tariff Deadlines Amid Trade Talks Progress

US President Donald Trump may extend deadlines for reimposing steep tariffs on imports from most countries as the White House is optimistic about progress in trade talks with several nations. The July 8 deadline to restart tariffs on nearly all other countries has been described by White House officials as “not critical,” leaving room for potential extension.

Trump had previously threatened to impose 50% tariffs on European Union imports, but agreed to delay that duty until July 9 after negotiations with EU leaders. The administration is now hoping to clinch more trade deals before the July 8 deadline.

White House officials have hinted at extending deadlines for countries engaging in “good faith” trade negotiations with the US, citing a lack of reason for tariffs to snap back higher. However, only two trade agreements have been finalized so far: with China and the UK. India is said to be close to signing a deal, but it remains unclear when it will materialize.

The White House believes that several countries are near reaching trade deals, with National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett suggesting that announcements could come after Congress passes Trump’s domestic agenda bill by July 4.
