Selena Gomez has responded to Eugenio Derbez, who criticized her performance in “Emilia Pérez”. Derbez said Gomez’s use of Spanish in the film was “indefensible” and that she didn’t know what she was saying. Gomez acknowledged Derbez’s criticism, stating that she did the best she could with the time she had. Despite Derbez’s remarks, the film remains a front-runner for several Academy Awards nominations.
Variety reported that Derbez enjoyed the film outside of Gomez’s role and credited it as an “interesting experiment”. However, he couldn’t understand why French director Jacques Audiard took on a story rooted in Mexican culture without speaking the language or knowing the culture. Gomez will not let Derbez’s comments bring her down, and she is still proud of her work in the movie.
