Faith Kipyegon Aims for Sub-4 Minute Mile Record

Faith Kipyegon will attempt to become the first woman in history to run a sub-4-minute mile on June 26 in Paris. The Nike-supported event, “Breaking4: Faith Kipyegon vs. the 4-Minute Mile,” is an exhibition that aims to show what’s possible for women in sport.

Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic champion and current world record holder in the mile with a time of 4:07.64, will run approximately 2 seconds faster per lap than the current world record to achieve the feat. The event is scheduled to take place at the Stade Sébastien Charléty in Paris.

Kipyegon’s historic attempt comes after she broke both the 1500-meter and 5,000-meter world records on the same track. She will be supported by Nike with custom gear, including a new speed suit and shoes designed for maximum performance.

The event will be streamed live on Prime Video and Nike’s YouTube channel at 1:15 p.m. ET, and Kipyegon has stated that one of her main goals is to inspire women and girls around the world to push beyond their limits.

Nike’s Vice President, Global Sports Marketing, Tanya Hvizdak, said, “Faith epitomizes everything we love about sport and the belief we have in our athletes. Her moonshot continues our legacy of supporting bold, pioneering pursuits that move the world forward through the power of sport.”
