Disney has announced that a sequel to its live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch is in development, just one month after the film’s theatrical debut on June 26. The original grossed $341.7 million worldwide in its first weekend and $183 million in the US. The new sequel was teased with a video featuring Stitch driving a mini convertible with license plate “2 fast,” leaving behind tire marks that spelled out “Lilo and Stitch 2.” The movie follows the same storyline as the original, focusing on the bond between Lilo and her genetically engineered alien friend Stitch. This news comes as part of Disney’s ongoing efforts to expand its live-action remake lineup, including projects like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and a live-action Moana adaptation currently in development.
