US President Donald Trump’s smartphone manufacturer, the Trump Organization, has removed its “Made in the USA” reference from its website. The company had previously announced plans to launch a US-made smartphone, but now its promotional materials no longer display this claim.
Despite the removal of the label, the Trump Mobile organization insists that the phone will still be manufactured in America. In an interview with the BBC, a spokesperson stated that speculation about the phone’s production location was “simply inaccurate” and that it would launch later this year with its upcoming mobile plan for Americans.
However, experts cast doubt on the feasibility of building smartphones from scratch in the US due to the country’s lack of high-tech supply chains. CCS Insight analyst Leo Gebbie noted that assembling a smartphone in the US might be the most likely path for claiming American sovereignty. Dan Ives, a tech analyst at Wedbush Securities, described President Trump’s claim that Apple would manufacture iPhones in the US as a “fairy tale that is not feasible.”
The removal of the “Made in USA” reference has sparked confusion among consumers and highlights the challenges of meeting Trump’s ambitious goals for American manufacturing.
