Rays Shortstop Wander Franco Found Guilty of Sexual Abuse of Minor

Rays shortstop Wander Franco was found guilty on a charge of sexual abuse of a minor in the Dominican Republic. He was sentenced to two years of suspended prison time, which is similar to probation if he meets certain conditions. The relationship between Franco and the 14-year-old girl began in December 2022 when Franco was 21. If upheld, the conviction could end his major league career due to moral turpitude convictions being considered a barrier for returning players to the US.

Prosecutors initially filed charges of sexual abuse, exploitation of a minor, and human trafficking against Franco in July 2024 with potential jail terms ranging from six months to five years. The mother of the girl was also convicted of sexually trafficking her daughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Franco’s lawyers have to file an appeal within five days of written notification of the full sentence, which is not expected until late July. If appealed, the case would be reviewed by a five-judge panel. The minor had confessed to having a four-month relationship with Franco, which ended due to “jealousy”.

The conviction and potential impact on Franco’s career were discussed by baseball players and insiders, who acknowledged his talent but also noted that the consequences of such charges could lead to serious repercussions for his future in the sport.
