Raccoon Confirmed Rabid After Biting Dog in Raleigh

A raccoon has tested positive for rabies after biting a dog on June 19 in Raleigh’s Windsor Trail area. The dog received the necessary vaccinations and booster shots, and is currently doing well. Anyone who may have come into contact with the raccoon is advised to call the Wake County Communicable Disease line at 919-250-4462.

Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters emphasized the importance of keeping pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations, stating that it’s a serious public health concern. The county encourages all pet owners with outdoor access to ensure their pets are vaccinated and recommends booster shots for pets allowed outside.

To prevent potential exposure, residents are advised to follow these guidelines:

– Do not approach unknown animals
– Wash wounds immediately after being bitten or scratched by an animal of unknown vaccination history
– Ensure pets have current rabies vaccinations and keep them indoors until booster vaccines are received
– Avoid feeding stray or unknown animals
– Secure trash cans with tight-fitting lids to prevent attracting wild animals
