The Texas Department of Public Safety has launched a public safety announcement reminding Texans of upcoming changes to the state’s Vehicle Safety Inspection Program. Beginning January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles will no longer require inspections prior to registration.
However, non-commercial vehicle owners must pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee when registering their vehicles with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. New vehicles purchased in Texas may need to pay an additional $16.75 if they have not been previously registered.
In contrast, commercial vehicles will still be required to pass regular safety inspections. Vehicle emissions tests, on the other hand, will continue to apply in certain counties, including major metropolitan areas and counties with strict emissions regulations.
The department emphasizes that vehicle owners should prioritize regular maintenance to ensure their safety on the road. Failing to maintain critical safety features like headlights, taillights, and tires can result in fines and put others at risk.
